Why choose breastfeeding?

If you’re wondering why it’s best to choose breastfeeding, I’ll tell you a bit more about its benefits from my experience as a maternity nurse. Do not hesitate to send me a message if you would like some additional advice

Breastfeeding is the most natural food for your baby and creates an intimate moment between you and your newborn child. Because you may already be producing breast milk from the sixteenth week of your pregnancy, you will therefore almost always have enough food available.

The very first time you feed your baby, it will receive colostrum, which is full of antibodies and protects your baby against diseases.

Take a breastfeeding course

While breastfeeding can be very beneficial for both you and your baby, it is not something that comes naturally to everyone. In the beginning, you will have to get used to it. What helps, is to attend a breastfeeding course beforehand where you will learn how to tell if your baby is hungry and how to latch on your baby.

Conveniently, many midwife agencies and hospitals organise breastfeeding information sessions. You can declare those to your health insurer, which in many cases means you don’t have to pay an extra fee.

Tips for those not breastfeeding

Whether you breastfeed or not is a completely personal choice. Those who do not, may also benefit from following my tips. First of all, keep in mind that during the first weeks of your pregnancy your body is already under the influence of hormones, creating extra glandular tissue. As a result, your breasts will be sensitive and will swell temporarily.

From the sixteenth week onwards, the glands can already start producing breast milk. To still give your baby all the benefits of colostrum, you can latch it on just after birth. The actual milk production has not yet started then, but your child will have been able to absorb the necessary antibodies.
